1 It happened at about that time that Judah left his brothers, to go down and settle with a certain Adullamite called Hirah.
1Sam 22:1  2Kgs 4:8  2Sam 23:13  Josh 15:35  Mic 1:15  Prov 13:20  Gen 19:2-3

2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite called Shua. He made her his wife and slept with her.
1Chr 2:3  Gen 24:3  2Cor 6:14  2Sam 11:2  Gen 3:6  Gen 6:2  Gen 6:4

3 She conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Er.
Gen 46:12  Num 26:19

4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son whom she named Onan.
Gen 46:12  Num 26:19

5 Yet again she gave birth to a son whom she named Shelah. She was at Chezib when she gave birth to him.
Num 26:20  1Chr 4:21  Gen 38:11  Gen 38:26  Gen 46:12

6 Judah took a wife for his first-born Er, and her name was Tamar.
Gen 21:21  Gen 24:3  Matt 1:3

7 But Er, Judah's first-born, offended Yahweh, and Yahweh killed him.
1Chr 2:3  Gen 46:12  Num 26:19  2Chr 33:6  Gen 6:8  Gen 13:13  Gen 19:13

8 Then Judah said to Onan, 'Take your brother's wife, and do your duty as her brother-in-law, to maintain your brother's line.'
Lev 18:16  Matt 22:23-27  Ruth 1:11  Ruth 4:5-11  Deut 25:5-10  Num 36:8-9

9 But Onan, knowing that the line would not count as his, spilt his seed on the ground every time he slept with his brother's wife, to avoid providing offspring for his brother.
Deut 25:6  Jas 3:14  Jas 3:16  Jas 4:5  Job 5:2  Ruth 1:11  Ruth 4:10

10 What he did was offensive to Yahweh, who killed him too.
Gen 46:12  Num 11:1  Num 26:19  1Chr 21:7  2Sam 11:27  Hag 1:13  Jer 44:4

11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, 'Go home as a widow to your father, until my son Shelah grows up,' for he was thinking, 'He must not die like his brothers.' So Tamar went home to her father.
Lev 22:13  Ruth 1:11-13

12 A long time passed, and then Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. After Judah had been comforted he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
Josh 15:10  2Sam 13:39  Gen 24:67  Judg 14:1  1Sam 25:4-8  1Sam 25:36  2Sam 13:23-29

13 When Tamar was told, 'Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep,'

14 she changed out of her widow's clothes, wrapped a veil around her to disguise herself, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that, although Shelah was grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.
Gen 38:26  Ezek 16:25  Gen 24:65  Gen 38:11-13  Jer 3:2  Prov 7:12

15 Judah, seeing her, took her for a prostitute, since her face was veiled.

16 Going up to her on the road, he said, 'Here, let me sleep with you.' He did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. 'What will you give me for sleeping with you?' she asked.
1Tim 6:10  2Sam 13:11  Matt 26:15  Deut 23:18  Ezek 16:33

17 'I will send you a kid from the flock,' he said. 'Agreed, if you give me a pledge until you send it,' she replied.
Ezek 16:33  Gen 38:20  Gen 38:24-25  Luke 16:8  Prov 20:16

18 'What pledge shall I give you?' he asked. 'Your seal and cord and the staff you are holding,' she replied. He gave them to her and slept with her, and she conceived by him.
Gen 38:25-26  Hos 4:11  Jer 22:24  Luke 15:22

19 Then she got up and left him and, taking off her veil, resumed her widow's weeds.
Gen 38:14  2Sam 14:2  2Sam 14:5

20 Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adullamite, to recover the pledge from the woman. But he did not find her.
2Sam 13:3  Gen 20:9  Judg 14:20  Lev 19:17  Luke 23:12

21 He enquired from the men of the place, 'Where is the prostitute who was by the roadside at Enaim?' 'There has been no prostitute there,' they answered.

22 So returning to Judah he said, 'I did not find her. What is more, the men of the place told me there had been no prostitute there.'

23 'Let her keep the things,' Judah said, 'or we shall become a laughing-stock. At least I sent her this kid, even though you did not find her.'
2Cor 4:2  2Sam 12:9  Eph 5:12  Rev 16:15  Rom 6:21  Prov 6:33

24 About three months later, Judah was told, 'Your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore, she is pregnant, as a result of her misconduct.' 'Bring her out,' Judah ordered, 'and let her be burnt alive!'
Lev 21:9  Judg 19:2  2Sam 12:5  2Sam 12:7  Deut 22:21-27  Deut 24:16  Eccl 7:26

25 But as she was being led off, she sent word to her father-in-law, 'It was the owner of these who made me pregnant. Please verify', she said, 'whose seal and cord and staff these are.'
Gen 38:18  Gen 37:32  1Cor 4:5  Jer 2:26  Ps 50:21  Rev 20:12  Rom 2:16

26 Judah recognised them and said, 'She was right and I was wrong, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.' He had no further intercourse with her.
1Sam 24:17  1Pet 4:2-3  Titus 2:11-12  2Sam 16:22  2Sam 20:3  2Sam 24:17  Ezek 16:52

27 When the time for her confinement came, there were twins in her womb!
Gen 25:24

28 During the delivery, one of them put out a hand, and the midwife caught it and tied a scarlet thread to it, indicating that this was the first to arrive.

29 Whereupon, he drew back his hand, and out came his brother. Then she said, 'What a breach you have opened for yourself!' So he was named Perez.
Gen 46:12  Num 26:20  1Chr 2:4  Matt 1:3  1Chr 9:4  Neh 11:6  Luke 3:33

30 Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his hand, so he was named Zerah.
